Dexatrim Reviews

Many dieters consider Dexatrim to be a “veteran” weight loss supplement. It has been in the market for over 30 years, helping consumers shed stubborn pounds with all-natural ingredients.

According to manufacturers, Dexatrim products “max out your weight loss” results. Whether you need help curbing carb cravings or are simply looking for an energy boost, Dexatrim offers a unique product line for an affordable price.

So Dexatrim products are popular, but are they reliable?

Popular Products

Dexatrim.com features 4 products for promoting weight loss:

Dexatrim Max Complex 7. Utilizing a proprietary blend of 7 weight loss ingredients, Dexatrim Max Complex is designed to reduce hunger and burn body fat.

Dexatrim Max Daytime Appetite Control. If you struggle with snacking between meals, then Daytime Appetite Control supposedly puts you in charge of your diet. It contains fast-acting appetite suppressants as well as metabolism boosters such as green tea and ginseng.

Dexatrim Natural Green Tea. There are numerous studies confirming green tea as an effective weight loss ingredient. It suppresses appetite and boosts energy so you burn more calories than you consume.

Dexatrim Natural Extra Energy. Supplying the same weight loss benefits as Natural Green Tea, this formula contains higher green tea concentrations for an added energy boost.

Active Ingredients

Although each product contains different concentrations, Dexatrim products feature many of the same ingredients:

Caffeine. This stimulant interacts with the central nervous system to increase energy levels and decrease appetite. The caffeine content in Dexatrim products ranges from 50-400 mg per day. Caffeine is an effective treatment for obesity in the correct amounts. However, studies show caffeine concentrations lower than 200 mg three times daily are no more effective than a placebo. [1]

Green Tea. In addition to providing caffeine, green tea supplies antioxidants that eliminate free radicals, reduce oxidative stress, and boost immunity. According to the University of Maryland, “the combination of green tea and caffeine improved weight loss and maintenance in people who were overweight and moderately obese. . .substances in green tea known as catechins are responsible for the herb’s fat-burning effect.” [2]

However, the green tea concentrations in Dexatrim products vary depending on the proprietary blend. Currently we do not know if Dexatrim contains the correct catechins and caffeine concentrations to determine if this ingredient is effectively used.

Asian Ginseng. Not to be confused with Siberian ginseng, this herb contains active substances called ginsenosides which may improve thinking and increase the body’s ability to cope with stress. There is not enough information to determine if Asian ginseng is effective for weight loss. But, a study published in Phytotherapy Research Journal suggests it may inhibit differentiation in the cells that store energy as fat. [3]

DHEA. Short for dehydroepiandrosterone, DHEA is an endogenous hormone secreted by the adrenal gland. It is a precursor to sex hormones and is often used to slow or reverse aging. Athletes often use DHEA to increase muscle mass, strength, and energy, but DHEA use is banned by the National Collegiate Athletic Association (NCAA).

Does It Contain Ephedra?

Earlier versions of the Dexatrim formula contained the decongestant phenylpropanolamine (PPA) and ephedra. However, in 2000, the FDA requested Dexatrim discontinue marketing products containing PPA. This was due to a Yale study[4] which linked PPA to increased risk of hemorrhagic stroke. Then, in 2004 the FDA banned ephedra due to cases of liver damage, seizure, and stroke.

Since this time, Dexatrim products have been reformulated to be ephedra and PPA-free. The strongest stimulant you’ll find in Dexatrim is caffeine.

Do You Need a Prescription?

As mentioned above, early Dexatrim formulas formerly contained the psychoactive drug phenylpropanolamine (PPA). This amphetamine was original developed as a decongestant due to its abilities to constrict blood vessels in the sinuses to allow for drainage.

In 2000, the FDA issued a health advisory against the use of the drug, and all drug companies were forced to discontinue marketing products containing the supplement.

Had Dexatrim continued to use PPA in its products, you would need a prescription to acquire it.

However, Dexatrim no longer contains PPA and is easily purchased online without the need for a doctor’s visit. Though if you’re taking medication, you’ll want professional advice just in case.

Are These Ingredients Safe?

Dexatrim products contain caffeine, which is widely known for causing headaches, dizziness, upset stomach, restlessness, and insomnia.

Additionally, Dexatrim Max Complex 7 contains unknown amounts of DHEA. While it’s safe to use for a few months, DHEA may cause side effects such as acne, hair loss, stomach upset, and high blood pressure. Some women may experience changes in menstrual cycle, facial hair growth, and a deeper voice after taking DHEA.

Furthermore, Dexatrim Max Complex 7 contains high doses of Niacin, which is known to cause flushing, tingling, itching, and rash-like symptoms on the face, arms, and chest.

Sally at Amazon.com wrote, “I purchased these pills months ago and started to take them as soon as I received them. I didn’t feel as hungry but I started to notice a rash around my neck and chest. I stopped using the pills for a few days and noticed the rash cleared up. I figured it was do to the pills but after a few weeks I felt like I had to try them again, just to be sure. Again, within a few days I broke out in a rash. I’ve tried other diet pills before and never had this kind of reaction.”

Recommended Usage

All Dexatrim products are designed to accompany a healthy diet and regular exercise. Usage instructions, however, vary depending on the individual formula.

• Dexatrim Max Complex – Take 2 capsules with a glass of water in the morning. A second serving may be taken again mid-afternoon. Do not take more than 4 capsules in a 24 hour period.

• Dexatrim Max Daytime Appetite Control – Take 1 to 2 caplets daily. Do not take more than 2 caplets per day.

• Dexatrim Natural Green Tea (and Extra Energy) – Take 1 caplet 3 times daily shortly before each meal. Do not take more than three caplets per day.

Can You Stack Dexatrim Products?

While many manufacturers encourage dieters to stack their products to enhance results, Dexatrim products are designed to be used separately. Each supplement contains varying degrees of caffeine, and combining multiple supplements increases your risk of experiencing negative side effects.

Product Pricing

Dexatrim.com does not sell supplements. Rather, the site provides links to various distributors, both online and to local retailers.

More About the Manufacturers

Dexatrim was originally owned by Thompson Medical, but has since been acquired by Chattem, INC, the same manufacturers who market Gold Bond, Allegra, and Icy Hot.

According to the Better Business Bureau, Chattem, INC received an A+ rating on a scale of A+ to F. It meets BBB accreditation standards and the company is committed to resolve consumer complaints. In the last 3 years, only 5 complaints have been filed with the BBB and each was resolved in a professional, prompt manner.

Is Dexatrim a Good Choice?

Dexatrim products may not be the most effective diet pills in the industry, but they’re certainly popular for a reason. No diet pill lasts this long if the ingredients are dangerous and don’t promote weight loss.

Consumer reviews about Dexatrim products are fairly mixed – some love what the supplement offers while others do not. The ingredients in Dexatrim may help dieters lose a few extra pounds, but only when used as part of a healthy diet and exercise program.

Considering the low price and availability, Dexatrim may be worth trying at least once.
